From New Painting to Post-impressionism in France

Art period

From 1863 to 1905 there was a change in painting in France that was marked by transformation from new painting to post-impressionism. The liberalization of salons of painting in 1863 including the creation of salon des Réfusés led to the development of the new French art that shifted away from traditional styles. Such painting stirred up controversy among critics and attracted public attention. The Impressionists held their own independent exhibitions till 1886. Rejecting limitations of impressionism, post-impressionists extended the development of impressionist painting till 1905 and preceded new styles of avant-garde.
